Best San Antonio Breakfast Spots
San Antonio, Texas, has been influenced by European, Mexican, and American cultures, so it’s no surprise that its cuisine incorporates flavors from all over the world. Breakfast in San Antonio has something for everyone, including local favorites like breakfast tacos and barbacoa, as well as more traditional pancakes and waffles. Here are the best places to eat breakfast in San Antonio.
La Panaderia Bakery Cafe
301 E Houston St, San Antonio, TX 78205
Fresh bread made on-site, La Panaderia Bakery Cafe on E. Houston St. quickly became one of the best breakfast joints in the heart of downtown SATX. La Panaderia Bakery Cafe serves great coffee, numerous breakfast items, but most impressively a nice selection of freshly made pastries daily. Panaderia also serves lunch and dinner. So basically you can just stay there all day and carb up. La Panaderia Bakery Cafe has ample seating, fast service, and friendly staff.
Nola Brunch and Beignets
111 Kings Ct, San Antonio, TX 78212
Nola Brunch and Beignets is nicely tucked in the middle of the infamous N. St. Mary’s Strip just North of the historic Pearl District. This little gem serves brunch 6 days a week and you can get your beignet fix in many different flavors that include seasonally flavored beignet, classic powered beignet, and Lemon Curd. Oh in case you’re wondering, the beignets are made in-house, from scratch, in small batches. Inside seating can be cozy, and the wait on the weekends depending on when you get there could be up to 45 minutes or more. However, the unique flavors and friendly staff is totally worth the visit.
Carnitas Lonja
1107 Roosevelt Ave., San Antonio, TX, 78210
As the old saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, this little taco joint embodies that statement. Carnitas Lonja is a Southside San Antonio taqueria serving some of the country’s best Michoacán-style carnitas. Don’t believe me? They are listed as one of the top 50 new restaurants in America by Bon Apetit. Carnitas Lonja will serve food until they run out of carnitas, they are open from 8 AM – 3 PM, CST, so get there early. This is one of the best tacos you will ever have in your life. An argument could be made about how this place isn’t really a ‘breakfast’ place, but this is San Antonio we’re talking about, the home of the Breakfast Tacos. If it’s a taco and served early, it’s breakfast here.
Alamo Biscuit Company
9630 Huebner Rd #103, San Antonio, TX 78240
Alamo Biscuit Company is definitely outside of downtown SATX, and it will require a bit of a drive, but the breakfast here will not disappoint. We tried going to Alamo Biscuit Company a few times, but it was always packed with a long wait. After a few tries, we finally went on a weekday with much more success. We were seated quickly by the friendly staff and before we knew it, we were shoving hot breakfast in our faces. This place has ample seating and parking, just don’t expect to get seated right away if you’re going over the weekend.
Bakery Lorraine
306 Pearl Pkwy #110, San Antonio, TX 78215
Bakery Lorraine has numerous locations between Austin and San Antonio, but the Pearl location is our favorite. A fan favorite during the weekends, Bakery Lorraine is nestled in the heart of the Pearl just north of downtown SATX. The pastry options at Bakery Lorraine is pretty incredible and pretty to look at. You can get a light, fluffy and flaky croissant or a hearty Croque Madame covered in bechamel, the choice is yours. The Pearl location of Bakery Lorraine is ample space, but seating can be an issue on the weekends. I would highly recommend checking them out on a weekday if you can. There’s plenty of parking around the Pearl, but if you’re late getting to Bakery Lorraine on the weekends, there’s a Farmer’s Market that runs most of the day on Saturday & Sunday, so parking can get pretty tough.
The Original Blanco Cafe
419 N St Mary’s St, San Antonio, TX 78205
One of the original staples of downtown San Antonio, The Original Blanco Cafe is a no-frills restaurant serving superb hot breakfast daily. I’ve also had lunch at Blanco cafe and without a doubt get the taco. Any of them. I would also recommend you check out Pork Chop breakfast if you’re particularly hungry. Seating and menu choices for The Original Blanco Cafe shouldn’t be an option, I can’t say the same for parking in downtown San Antonio though. So if you’re visiting SATX and already hanging around downtown, check out The Original Blanco Cafe off N. St. Mary’s St.
Wild Barley Kitchen Co.
Since Wild Barley Kitchen Co. is a food truck, we shamelessly follow them around San Antonio on Saturdays after our Farmer’s Market run. Emily finds their location through social media and we drive there. The good thing is that they stay around downtown SATX, so anywhere Wild Barley Kitchen Co. decides to park, it’s within a 10-minute drive or less. Wild Barley Kitchen Co. is often found hanging around Roadmap Brewing Co. serving over-baked pizza’s when not serving amazing breakfast bagels. They sometimes make an amazing bagel called Notorious P.I.G., if happen to see it on their menu, I suggest you try it out.
Halcyon Southtown
1414 S Alamo St, San Antonio, TX 78210
Since we’ve been living in Southtown, Halcyon has been our go-to breakfast join for almost 5 years. The menu has gone through numerous changes over time, but the brunch menu served on Saturday & Sunday has remained a staple for us. Doomsday & The Old Texas brunch items are worth checking out, as well as their assortment of coffee-related drinks such as the Cortado or Vietnamese Coffee. Halcyon Southtown is located in the Bluestar District, about a 10-minute walk from Hemisfair, which isn’t so bad in the Fall or Winter, but good luck in the Texas summer.
The Guenther House
205 E Guenther St, San Antonio, TX 78204
With over 160+ years of tradition, this list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t mention The Guenther House restaurant in Southtown SATX. Located right next to the River Walk, you can make the trip from downtown heading south and end up at The Guenther House 15-20 minutes later. There’s a lot of history to The Guenther House for those that interested, but most importantly, their breakfast is superb. The Guenther House only serves Breakfast and Lunch, and I would recommend Buttermilk Biscuits & Sausage Gravy or the Southern Sweet Cream Waffle Platter.
Snooze AM Eatery San Antonio, Texas
255 E Basse Rd Suite #160, San Antonio, TX 78209
Originally from the Denver, Co., Snooze AM Eatery now has three locations in SATX as of the writing of this article. They also have locations in Austin (which we’ve also been to), both SATX and ATX Snooze AM Eateries serve amazing breakfast, which is good cause that’s all they really serve. Snooze AM Eatery has become an obsession for Emily and me, we’ve literally been to every single opening of Snooze in both SATX and ATX. My favorite is the corn beef hash, but seriously try any of their “Bennies” (Benedict) and you shall not be disappointed. The closest location to Snooze AM Eatery from downtown SATX is the Quarry location. Snooze opens early and closes early, so get your breakfast game on if you’re a later sleeper.
Pete’s Tako House
502 Brooklyn Ave, San Antonio, TX 78215
Pete’s Tako House is a local favorite that’s been around for 4 decades! They serve breakfast taco, burritos, enchiladas and so much more. When Emily and I are short on time on the weekends, we pick up 4-6 tacos from Pete’s Tako House in the morning after spending an hour at the Farmer’s Market. This place is always busy on the weekends, a true local gem. Pete’s Tako House is located right off-Broadway about a 5-minute drive from downtown SATX. For authentic SATX breakfast tacos, scooter your way to Pete’s Tako House.
Liberty Bar: San Antonio Eatery & Bar | American Fare
1111 S Alamo St, San Antonio, TX 78210
One of our favorites here in Southtown, Liberty Bar offers unique breakfast items (exotic game, boar, venison, and buffalo) like the wild boar sausage. Liberty Bar is great for large families looking to have breakfast together with so much room and seating on two different floors. Parking is also not an issue as it sits right in the King William district with ample street parking and a large parking lot that accommodates Liberty Bar customers. We’ve never been disappointed at Liberty Bar, the staff is always friendly and the food comes out on time and perfectly.
