McKenna Children’s Museum
Located in the heart of New Braunfels, TX, McKenna Children’s Museum is a wonderland of learning, exploration, and discovery. This interactive museum offers a unique and exciting experience for kids of all ages. From exhibits that teach science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts to hands-on experiences that encourage creativity and imagination.
We have been to the McKenna Children’s Museum two times before, and I think it is my two-year-old’s favorite museum. He loves playing in their water area and driving the ambulance. I think membership is pretty pricey, but if you live in the area and you have young kids, it is worth the cost. Children and adults are $7.50. There are usually Groupon deals available, so take a look at that app before you visit the museum.
I really like this museum because you can pretty much see from one end of the museum to the other. Therefore, I can sit and play with my two-year-old while still keeping a watchful eye on my daughter. It’s not the largest museum, but that doesn’t seem to hinder it’s appeal. Even though it isn’t as big as the DoSeum in San Antonio, there are still plenty of things to do. Plus, it’s definitely geared toward younger kids.
Their website does a wonderful job illustrating the different exhibits available. When you look at the pictures, you’ll understand why I consider this place make-believe heaven. My son loved playing in the bank, grocery store, camping site, and the water table area.
Inside the McKenna Children’s Museum
I took a change of clothes with me because outside there are water tables, and my son loves splashing in the water. While my son was splashing away, my daughter was busy doing other things outside. There is a climbing wall, a large climber, an enclosed area that is filled with huge building blocks, and a music corner. We stayed in this area for about half an hour, but then we had to leave because my son started spraying people with water. He left this area kicking and screaming. Since he was drenched, we went to the family restroom and changed him.
Hands-on activities for children
From the moment you step through the door, kids are encouraged to touch, explore, and experiment with the exhibits.
There’s a pretend grocery store where children can shop for food and learn about nutrition and healthy eating habits. Kids can also climb aboard a real fire truck and learn about fire safety. In the “My Town” exhibit, children can play dress-up and pretend to be doctors, post office workers, and more.
For children who love to build and create, there’s a construction zone where they can use tools and building materials to construct their own structures. There’s also a water play area where kids can splash and play while learning about the properties of water.
In addition to these exhibits, the museum also offers special educational programs and events throughout the year. These include science experiments, art workshops, story times, and more. The museum’s staff is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about helping children learn, and they are always available to answer questions and provide guidance.
Outside Area
By the time we went back inside, there were a lot more people. However, we were still able to do all the activities. Their art room is open the entire time and you can enter it and paint or color whenever you want. My daughter loves for me to paint her face. Although I am not a great artist, they have a wonderful step-by-step guide to help you paint your child’s face.
Food isn’t allowed in the Children’s museum. If you want to leave and eat, that is perfectly fine because your entrance receipt is good all day. Since my son was tired, we just went ahead and drove back to San Antonio. We will probably return a couple of times before the summer ends.
