Cave Without A Name

Cave Without A Name in Boerne Texas has quite an unusual name, doesn’t it? This cave opened to the general public way back in 1939 when my mom was just 1 year old. Why such a strange name?

Well, back in 1939, a contest to name it was held. One boy declared that it was just too pretty for a name. He won the contest and got $500 for his winning entry, no small prize back then!

From San Antonio, you can drive there in less than an hour. It is located at 325 Kreutzberg Road.

Compared to a cave-like Carlsbad Caverns in Carlsbad, New Mexico, this is a very small cave. It has 6 rooms with an underground river and beautiful stalagmite and stalactite formations.

To get to this cave, you have to climb down 126 steps. Not so bad, but keep in mind that if you ever again want to see the light of day, you must climb back up 126 steps. This can be a bit painful if your legs are not in shape.

Make sure that you bring a light jacket and good walking shoes–no sandals or heels. The last time I was there, it was stuffy and warm in the cave, not chilly like Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Bring a camera, too, for some spectacular shots of God’s underground handiwork.

The cave has good lighting and excellent walkways. It is just those stairs going back up that most people get concerned with.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Cave Without A Name is open from 9AM until 6PM. The rest of the year, it is open from 10AM until 5PM.

Check their website for current admission prices and other information. Or you can call (830)537-4212. This is a long-distance call from San Antonio.
